Product details

Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918), the most important Swiss painter at the turn of the 20th century, broke with the artistic conventions of his time. As a creator of impressive landscapes and portraits, monumental history and symbolist figure paintings, he created an oeuvre that attracted international attention even during his lifetime. The 500 or so portraits and 50 self-portraits Hodler created from 1872 to 1917 account for about a quarter of his oeuvre. They are among the strongest representations of the human being in Swiss art anywhere and bear witness both to Hodler's many encounters and to the stations of his life. Since 1998, the Swiss Institute for Art Research SIK-ISEA has been compiling a catalog of Ferdinand Hodler's complete works. Volume 1 on the landscapes is now followed by Volume 2 on the portraits: Three introductory essays, the catalog section.
