Chi Hui is one of the most versatile voices in the contemporary Chinese science fiction cosmos. Huge beetles, hyper-intelligent rats, evil pirates, and humanoid robots inhabit the worlds of the four stories in this volume. The protagonists—primarily women—are left to fend for themselves and can only survive by adapting. The author from Chengdu explores themes such as the end of the Anthropocene, virtual reality, coming of age, and gender equality. Chi Hui not only questions coexistence but also survival in our world. Additionally, an afterword by Sanfeng, an important researcher of Chinese science fiction, contextualizes the stories, which are accompanied by numerous illustrations from students of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences in the class of artist Ruohan Wang.
