Fehlermanagement im Krankenhaus vs. Luftfahrt

According to a study in the USA, errors in medicine are among the ten leading causes of death for hospitalized patients. The increasing discussion among the medical community in recent years, particularly regarding the use of a reporting system modeled after aviation, along with numerous articles about comparable procedures in the operating room and the cockpit, piqued the author's interest in exploring the extent to which genuine parallels exist or merely similarities are described. With over 22 years of leadership experience in the Air Force, including 14 years in the cockpit and more than 12 additional years in leadership roles within healthcare, the author has come to realize the many similarities, as well as the significant differences, that prevail in both fields. This paper aims to investigate the central safety concept of error management in hospitals. In this context, the high-security environment of aviation will be presented, and its development, along with its implications for error management in hospitals, including requirements, prerequisites, and implementation options, will be derived.
