As early as 8000 years ago, around 6000 BC, Roman women are said to have sworn by Viridum, the bright green and Sicilian pressed version of olive oil, as a beauty treatment. Over the centuries, olive oil has increasingly become a staple of Mediterranean cuisine that is hard to imagine living without. However, it has recently taken on an additional role: it has been rediscovered as a remedy, for example, against colon cancer. Its estrogen-like effect for women in menopause is also being researched. The polyphenols are said to be particularly effective.
