The prestigious Berlin Hotel Adlon has a rich and varied history spanning over a hundred years. Even before it opened in 1907 at Pariser Platz, there were protests: the historic Palais Redern had to make way for Lorenz Adlon's ambitious plans and was demolished. The Hotel Adlon, which rose in its place, soon became a jewel of the city. Here, kings and emperors, Indian maharajas, and the Russian czar, as well as politicians and film stars from around the world, stayed. Just a few days after the end of World War II, the building was completely destroyed by fire, but after the reunification of Germany, it was rebuilt by the Fundus Group in the 1990s. While it has been somewhat altered structurally compared to the pre-war building, it still aims to be a luxury accommodation. Today, the Adlon is once again as much a part of Berlin as the Brandenburg Gate.
