The creeping transformation of parliamentary democracies towards authoritarian systems is becoming increasingly visible to observers of current events. Organizations that are exclusively committed to capital interests are creating supranational structures that elude democratic control. Political representatives elected by the people see themselves degraded to henchmen of the economically powerful, many of them closing ranks with them. "The end of democracy... as we know it" was the title of the article by the sociologist Bernd Hamm, who died in 2015, and thus provided the impetus for this book.
