Our revised new edition presents, in addition to the eight pieces in its appendix, a ninth which Schumann sorted out during the final editing. Robena Ann Laidlaw, to whom the work is dedicated, played some of the Fantasiestücke in public, along with other friends of Schumann, even before they were printed. Later, the work found rapid circulation. Schumann received the greatest compliment from Franz Liszt, who wrote enthusiastically: "... the Fantasiestücke have interested me very much. I truly play them with pleasure. And God knows I can't exactly say that about many things".
