Minuchin develops his model of structural family therapy under the influence of French structuralism, according to which both the individual and social groups are open systems that interact and can be explained by certain parameters, such as structure. In Minuchin's view, family systems are dysfunctional because they produce and perpetuate the suffering of individual members. The goal of therapy is to redesign the family organizational schema. Accordingly, the positions of the members within this group change, and consequently, the experiences of each individual are altered. In this way, the family member is meant to find autonomy within the system while also feeling like part of the larger whole, "family." The book serves as a compendium for family therapy practice, as well as for learners and educators for illustration purposes.
