Falko Bornschein

Carried by the ideal of Franciscan values and the Good News of Jesus Christ, Hildegard Hendrichs (1923-2013), an artist based in Erfurt from 1960 onwards, created expressive pictorial works of sometimes monumental size. In addition to sculptures and reliefs made of wood, the trained sculptress also left behind numerous copper engravings and colour-intensive oil paintings. Hendrichs' visual oeuvre also includes a series of drawings as well as individual graphics and designs for mosaics. Later, the spiritually inclined artist wrote and published meditative texts, songs and instrumental pieces. Her works were created in the field of tension between the Nazi dictatorship, the Second World War and divided Germany. Due to her exclusively Christian art and her work outside the state structures of the atheistic GDR, her works are mostly known only in church circles.
