People with a trans identity are, on average, poorer and more likely to have mental health issues. They would benefit from methodologically sound studies on gender incongruence, cross-sex hormones, and the care of surgically altered bodies. However, mainstream trans activism does not address these topics at all. It essentially pursues two goals: to grant male individuals access to women’s spaces and to lift restrictions on cross-sex hormones and gender-affirming surgeries, even for minors. It is high time that "Trans" by Helen Joyce is finally available in German, as we need her cool, clear analysis here just as urgently as in English-speaking countries. The conciliatory final chapter is particularly successful, as it well represents and defends the rights of trans people while making good suggestions on how these rights can be protected without infringing on the rights of women, children, lesbians, and gay men. This book is a compelling, overdue argument for a more critical examination of self-ID. Even those who are outraged by Joyce's positions would benefit from understanding them. As she points out, self-ID performs quite poorly in surveys when its actual principles are explained in detail.
