Illness is not only accompanied by complaints and symptoms but also by limitations in abilities. These limitations serve not only as diagnostic criteria but primarily determine the extent of the consequences of the illness, as well as the severity and social medical value of diseases. Judgments about work capacity, reduced earning capacity, benefits for participation, or the need for care are based on impairments in abilities. A detailed description of abilities has immediate significance for patient care. Abilities are particularly important in the diagnosis of mental disorders, in assessing the consequences of illness, for social medical evaluations, and for therapy. There are specifically ability-oriented treatment approaches, such as self-confidence training or vocational skills training as part of benefits for participation in working life. This book presents what is meant by abilities, how they can be captured and quantified, what significance they have in mental illnesses, and what therapeutic and social medical consequences arise from this. This is done in relation to the Mini-ICF-APP, an external rating instrument that allows for the capture and quantification of psychopathology-sensitive impairments in abilities.
