Product details

A current research overview of historical timber-framed construction not only in Germany but also in neighboring European countries was the goal of the annual conference of the Working Group for House Research in Nuremberg in 2017. The range of the 28 contributions in this volume extends from Great Britain and France to present-day Turkey, from the Spanish Basque Country to Denmark and Poland. The significantly increased knowledge about medieval and early modern timber-framed construction in various regions of Germany, as well as in Switzerland and Austria, is also vividly summarized in several contributions. Through building research, archaeology, and dendrochronology, extensive, previously largely unknown stocks of timber-framed buildings dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries have been uncovered, documented, and dated. Various aspects of the construction and decorative design of timber framing, as well as spatial organization and usage, can thus be compared for the first time in a European context.
