Buildings may contain building materials and fixtures that contain pollutants, which must be remediated during construction in existing buildings (extension, conversion, modernisation or repair), deconstruction or continued use. For this reason, specialist planning services on 'Pollutants in buildings - structural and technical installations' are becoming increasingly important, as more and more buildings are being converted and planners, but also building owners, are confronted with the topic of pollutants. Issue 43 presents a catalogue of measures that describes a systematic approach and is thus intended to contribute to the quality of dealing with this topic. It includes a risk analysis and a compilation of the historical and actual situation as well as expert and planner services. Of course, the motivation of the client must not be disregarded in all measures. The term motivation describes the objective or task behind the renovation: 1. use (preservation of the existing building without construction measures) 2. construction measures (maintenance/rehabilitation while preserving the existing building) 3. demolition/deconstruction (partial or complete deconstruction) 4. Value assessment (determination of financial risks/expenses due to pollutants) In the second part of the booklet, recommendations are made for the remuneration of experts and planners for the investigation and remediation of pollutants. In the authors' opinion, this topic is not covered by the HOAI.
