I deeply admire this novel, which I have read several times. Graham Greene on "Fabian": Here, the poet lets a person wander through the insane Berlin, someone who is neither very strong nor very skilled, but simply a human being: one who is not yet insane, who has heart and mind. Hermann Hesse. Dr. Jakob Fabian drifts through the Berlin of the "Golden Twenties." He throws himself into erotic adventures, drinks with journalists in a contest, and tries to maintain his integrity and ideals in the labyrinth of the metropolis. But the city twists and turns like in a fever dream; moral norms have lost their validity, political extremes are at odds, and the young democracy of the Weimar Republic is shaken to its foundations. Then Fabian meets in the studio of a sculptress, where light girls and death candidates gather.
