An actor of German unity reflects. Markus Meckel is known as a long-time SPD member of the Bundestag and a foreign policy expert who continues to actively advocate for a European-oriented culture of remembrance and the processing of the dictatorships of the 20th century. However, his name is particularly associated in the public eye with the opposition movement in the GDR, the Peaceful Revolution of 1989, and the process of German reunification. Together with Martin Gutzeit, he initiated the founding of the Social Democratic Party in the GDR and represented it at the Round Table. After the free elections in the GDR, he temporarily led the East SPD and negotiated German reunification as Foreign Minister. In his memoirs, he describes his unique journey in the GDR, which transformed him, the son of a pastor, into a politician.
