The book is aimed at trainees, advanced learners, and practitioners, as well as interested hobby seamstresses who want to grasp the fundamentals of pattern drafting. It contains the essential guidelines for constructing basic patterns for skirts, pants, and tops, along with suggestions and instructions for many alterations or modifications from basic patterns to model patterns. However, the sense of good fit and perfect pattern drafting cannot just be conveyed; it must be learned and experienced through practical testing.

Beginning with a detailed introduction, the construction of simpler basic patterns is demonstrated in easily understandable steps. Many illustrations make even complicated concepts clear. This is followed by the development of model patterns up to the finished production pattern, which can then be cut out. The chapters are thematically structured, with the constructions becoming increasingly complex as a chapter progresses. Some techniques are exemplified, for instance, on a skirt, but can also be applied to a dress, as it consists of a skirt part as well.

With the advent of ready-to-wear clothing in the late 19th century, rational cutting methods became necessary. Various pattern systems emerged, which are taught in vocational schools. It is not uncommon for a school to teach according to its own system. There is no uniform system for pattern construction, neither in Germany nor in Europe. This book does not introduce a new system for pattern construction. Instead, it attempts to simplify proven and tested pattern developments and adapt them for teaching purposes.
