E.T.A. Hoffmann: Der Sandmann

The "Schroedel Interpretations" offer sophisticated yet understandably and interestingly written descriptions and interpretations of important works of German literature. The volumes in the series are particularly suitable for preparation for lectures, term papers, examinations and exams. In his famous story "Der Sandmann" (1815), E. T. A. Hoffmann uses psychological depth of field and a thrilling storyline to describe the crisis situation of the main character Nathanael, which is based on a childhood trauma. The further his pathological development progresses, the more fantasies overlay his perception of reality. The present volume analyzes the way in which Nathaniel alienates himself from his social environment and examines the sophisticated narrative strategies and the complex network of motifs in the text. It is also shown to what extent already in E. T. A. Hoffmann.
