Product details
When there was still sausage in the sausage - memories of a childhood in the butcher's shop Klaus Reichert grew up with his brother Thomas in the butcher's shop that their grandfather founded - and that their father continued to run with heart and soul. A family business with tradition, where work and life merged. Klaus Reichert remembers only too well the sounds of the sausage machine at five in the morning, the meat saleswomen in smock aprons, their smell and their cordiality. But he also remembers the cold store where the slaughtered animals hung, where he played hide and seek with his brother - a time when the butcher's trade still counted for something and meat had its price. A journey back to the good old days and an entertaining plea for meat consumption with moderation and decency - even in the present. "The world of my childhood was a butcher's shop. A store, a sausage kitchen, cold stores, a yard, our small apartment, a children's room that I had to share with my brother Thomas. From the outside, it was a romantic family business where work and life merged. We played hide-and-seek between bacon-covered pig halves and rosy beef quarters, we threw cow eyes at each other and, as a test of courage, stuck our arms up to our shoulders in bloodstained buckets filled to the brim with smelly beef rumen, slimy cow intestines and agonizing pig's lungs. We had a wonderful childhood. It was beautiful and terrible at the same time." Fascinating contemporary and family history of a disappearing craft.
