Pope Gregory I, commonly known as Saint Gregory the Great, served as Bishop of Rome from September 3, 590, until his death. He is known for initiating the first recorded large-scale Roman mission, the Gregorian Mission, to convert the then-pagan Anglo-Saxons in England to Christianity. Gregory is also recognized for his writings, which were more prolific than those of all his predecessors as pope. He is one of the Latin Church Fathers and a Doctor of the Church. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Anglican Communion, various Lutheran, and other Protestant denominations. Immediately after his death, Gregory was canonized by the people. The Protestant Reformer John Calvin greatly admired Gregory and stated in his 'Institutes' that Gregory was the last good pope. He is the patron saint of musicians, singers, students, and teachers. This volume contains his most important writings, namely the four books of 'Dialogues' and 'The Book of Pastoral Rule.'.
