Every relationship of hegemony is necessarily an educational relationship. (Antonio Gramsci) The study edition provides a selection of Gramsci's essential thematic drafts on issues of education and pedagogy: the role of intellectuals in society, the state and civil society as pedagogical-ethical entities, common sense as a necessary starting point for social education and critical subject formation, as well as immediate school policy considerations that highlight the emancipatory significance of the comprehensive school. In December 2002, the Critical Complete Edition of Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks was completed with Volume 10, the index volume. This makes it possible for the first time to thoroughly study Gramsci's politically highly relevant and scientifically stimulating work in the German language. By providing the complete context of its creation, the complete edition sets standards for research. For the many who cannot or do not want to afford the study of the complete edition due to their academic biography, the required time commitment, or financial reasons, a series of thematic selection volumes will be published in the coming years. Like the present volume, they will compile thematically related texts from Gramsci's scattered notes on politically and theoretically particularly relevant focal points and make them accessible for study purposes, accompanied by a scientific commentary.
