Philostratus Flavius Philostratus (circa 170 - circa 250 AD) came from one of the leading families in Athens with strong connections to the Roman emperors. After his education in Athens, Philostratus gained recognition as a speaker, rhetoric teacher, and author. He served as a tutor to the sons of Emperor Septimius Severus and his wife Iulia Domna. After their death in 217 AD, he returned to Athens. His extensive education is reflected in his writings on sports, heroes, descriptions of artworks, treatises, and a detailed biography of the philosopher Apollonius of Tyana. Marix offers his "Lives of the Sophists" in a bilingual new edition. Kai Brodersen is a professor of Ancient Culture at the University of Erfurt. At the Römerweg publishing house, he has published bilingual editions of works by Apuleius, Cetius Faventinus, Damigeron, Galen, Philostratus, and Scribonius Largus.
