Product details
The book serves as a kind of historical document that highlights the significance of scouting for youth (specifically for girls) in the post-war period. The experiences of fifteen-year-old Ingrid Seibel, who was part of the Bündische Pfadfinderinnen in Wiesbaden, are recorded in her handwriting and enriched with photos and drawings. It is a copy of her so-called annual project from 1958, which was customary in the 1950s at the Gustav-Freytag-Schule, a secondary school for girls in Wiesbaden. The 9th-grade students (there was no coeducation at that time) were required to choose a topic from their world and present their experiences, thoughts, and reflections in detail. This task was in addition to other school and homework and was graded. Small pencil notes from the teacher can be seen; the old spelling rules were still in effect, which is particularly noticeable with the 's' sound. This annual project not only informs about many aspects that still apply to scouting today but also provides insight into the educational value of being a girl scout for the student, such as fostering independence, responsible living in community, and appreciation of nature. The editor, Ingrid Herta Drewing, who rediscovered this annual project while clearing out, decided to scan and publish the text because she realizes that much of what she experienced back then has influenced her outlook on life. Meaningful leisure activities are as important for children and adolescents as education in school. This includes both artistic education, sports, and experiencing nature.
