Books are of great importance for children growing up, especially in early and middle childhood. They are important for the development of language and reading, enable children to take excursions into unknown and fantastic worlds, can provide emotional support and serve to impart knowledge. At the same time, they always impart social knowledge - ideas about social orders and hierarchies. In this way, they significantly shape children's view of the world, of themselves and of others. From a diversity- and inequality-sensitive perspective, this book brings together articles that examine children's books, but also toys and children's television, to see how social diversity is represented and negotiated in them. The topics discussed include migration, multilingualism, racism, social class, family norms, gender and disability. In addition, we will ask what significance diversity in children's media has for children growing up.
