Sebastian Lübcke examines philosophical and literary engagements with fulfillment and the ontologically absolute from the 18th to the 20th century. It becomes evident that texts from the modern era that deal with the 'divine' or 'eternal life,' despite sometimes having anti-Christian agendas, are repeatedly influenced by 'classical' Christian modes of thought and representation. Through a 'poetics of fulfillment' tradition line that includes Klopstock, Hölderlin, Rückert, George, and the Surrealists, the author illustrates how, in poetry and poetics, the claim is made to symbolically make present the fulfilled time of 'eternal life'—according to each author's own conception—within the 'aesthetic own time' of the poems.
