Earthing is the most important measure for protection against indirect contact. Only a correctly designed earthing system can reduce the potential differences that arise in the event of a fault and thus prevent hazards to persons. Since the first publication of Volume 6 in 1996, standardisation has continued on both the European (Cenelec) and international (IEC) sides. Even though the basic criteria have not changed, it is time to take up the current status of the standards in this volume of the book series Plant Technology for Electrical Distribution Networks and to provide a consistent explanation for the user in practice. In addition, possible solutions for current problems and questions concerning the topic of earthing are newly included.
