(Er-)Leben von Spiritualität

Whether as a gateway to temptations or as a path to experiencing God - the five senses played a significant role in the life and experiences of religious communities in the Middle Ages. Their strict culture of prayer, asceticism, and control created a world of experience where spiritual encounters could also be seen, heard, smelled, tasted, and touched. But how exactly was this achieved? What visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile, and synesthetic experiences characterized the lived spirituality in medieval monasteries? Based on these questions, 16 researchers examine from an interdisciplinary perspective how the five senses were controlled, shaped, and utilized in monastic and regular canonical communities through systems of rules, rituals, prayer practices, texts, and artifacts.
