Epistvlae ex Ponto - Briefe vom Schwarzen Meer

Exiled by Emperor Augustus to the Black Sea (Pontus), Ovid sent his laments (Tristia) and the Epistulae ex Ponto to Rome. Since 1967, there has been a prose translation of the Tristia by Georg Luck, while the Epistulae are presented here for the first time in a complete German prose translation, accompanied by notes and a detailed appendix. As in the Tristia, Ovid laments his place of exile, Tomis, but other aspects come to the fore: connections to named friends, the role of poetry in exile, the solidarity of poets, and the gradual acclimatization to foreign lands. Books I-III form a symmetrically composed unit based on 'honorary places,' while Book IV was likely published posthumously.
