Destination management is responsible for the effective and efficient marketing of a place or region. When coordinating the involved service providers, strategic decisions must be made tangible to enable proper controlling. So far, there are only a few controlling approaches in destination management.

Based on interviews with destination managers from German-speaking regions, Manuel Becher identifies the criticisms of traditional destination management and develops a metric system for better marketing of tourist destinations. In particular, the expansion to include a strategic perspective by incorporating leading indicators into the concept represents an improvement over existing controlling concepts for destination management organizations.
