Hans Weder was an addicted Art Brut painter. As a social case with a mental illness, he was considered marginal and was an outsider who had to experience both the deviant and the normative – and ultimately expressed this. He was aware that Art Brut artists have the great, indeed unique opportunity to say anything they want. They know no censorship and operate outside the mainstream. Hans Weder's artistic creativity was based on this status of absolute freedom.

Since his early death in 2021, hundreds of works by the Herisau artist have emerged that he was unable to exhibit during his lifetime. This book contains a selection and thus provides space to view Hans Weder's poignant, expressive painting "en face.".
