Measurement-based monitoring of construction projects has undergone intensive development in methods and techniques in recent years. Geomatics, as an interdisciplinary collaboration between geotechnics and engineering geodesy, increasingly contributes to solving geotechnical issues using measurement methods. In practice, geotechnical and geodetic monitoring measurement techniques have merged in various ways, and normative regulations, such as those related to observation methods and quality management, have also contributed to the growing significance of geomatics.

In line with the foundational considerations of geomatics and the objectives of geotechnical measurements, the structure of these recommendations follows a logically organized approach to the planning process for a project-specific measurement task: Starting from considerations regarding the measurement parameters to be captured and the measurement systems and methods to be employed for capturing these parameters, the focus is on data management, which includes aspects of data collection, transmission, and security, as well as data evaluation, which encompasses the processes of data preparation, analysis, and visualization. The fundamental or application-specific recommendations for developing measurement programs are illustrated through case studies that showcase best-practice applications. Aspects of quality assurance and contractual frameworks are also addressed. In summary, this provides the user with a guide that comprehensively covers all essential aspects of geomatics in detail according to the state of the art.
