The educational reforms of the past two hundred years would hardly be conceivable without the work of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778). Particularly with his 1762 published educational novel "Émile," he had a lasting impact. In it, the French philosopher exemplarily advocates for a "natural education," which aims to ensure his fictional pupil Émile a development as undisturbed as possible, free from the pressures of premature adulthood. Rousseau's consistent line of thought and stylistic brilliance remain striking to this day.
