The work of the Expressionist Emil Nolde enjoys great popularity - his floral representations are one of the most beloved themes among the public. Both individual flowers and colorful flowerbeds, as well as entire garden designs, are central motifs in Nolde's oeuvre. Influenced by his mother's flower garden in the small village of Nolde, the farmer's son learned early on to appreciate "the sprouting, the blooming, the glowing" flowers, which "bloomed for his and my joy." Later, Nolde created gardens at his rural residences in Alsen, Utenwarf, and Seebüll that inspired him to create his vividly colored paintings and virtuoso watercolors. Flowers always surrounded the painter in his daily life, on windowsills, shelves, steps, or tables in his home, as well as in his Berlin studio. With his early flower and garden paintings, Nolde laid the foundation for the development of his later work: they gave him the courage to apply pure and radiant colors freely onto the canvas or paper, leading him to discover color as the true medium of expression in his art.
