Emanuel Hirsch was a theologian of high methodological reflection who consciously faced up to the challenges of modernity and emphatically advocated a "remodelling" of traditional doctrines. At the same time, however, as a person he was characterised by a traditional ethos and experienced modernity as a political threat. In a frightening delusion, he pinned his hopes on National Socialism. Even in his self-interpretation after 1945, he did not see himself in a position to self-critically revise his views. This volume makes previously largely unpublished autobiographical and family texts from his estate accessible, allowing a closer look at his person, the context of his life and his self-image.
