Product details
Dear readers, Latin America is home to huge tropical forests and therefore an incredible treasure trove of natural beauty and rare animal and plant species. More than two thirds of all animal and plant species on our planet can be found in the tropical forests. This includes hummingbirds - most of the 340 or so hummingbird species live in the tropical rainforest. Over the course of evolution, the individual hummingbird species have adapted to certain flowers in the tropical forest. The shape and length of their beaks are precisely matched to a particular flower shape. This means that the hummingbird is also dependent on the occurrence of the respective plant species. If the plant dies out, the hummingbird also disappears. OroVerde is endeavouring to preserve this unique habitat with many projects in tropical countries: Reforestation, help for small farmers and environmental education projects are examples. People here in the industrialised countries have a major article to write about tropical forest conservation, because many of the causes of destruction lie with us. With our environmental education projects, we want to inspire young people in particular to get involved. This book shows both young and adult readers how dependent a small bird species is on an intact environment. If we all join in and help to protect them, we can preserve the tropical forest with the hummingbirds! Dr Volkhard Wille Chairman of the OroVerde Tropical Forest Foundation.
