Jorge Luis Borges, born in 1899 in Buenos Aires, founded literary magazines with friends at a young age. His first collection of poems was published in 1923. From 1950 to 1953, he served as president of the Argentine Writers' Association and from 1955 to 1973 as director of the National Library of Buenos Aires. In 1961, he received the International Literature Prize Formentor, along with Beckett, and numerous international honors followed until his death in 1986 in Buenos Aires. Few writers of the 20th century have influenced as many other authors as Borges. Jorge Luis Borges began writing early—essays, poems, short stories. He traveled extensively and learned English, French, German, and Latin.
