Eisenbahnchronik Münsterland

The Münsterland region between the Teutoburg Forest in the northeast, the Lippe River in the south and the border with the Netherlands in the west was quite well served by railways in earlier years. In addition to the two main railways running north-south via Münster to Emden and Hamburg, another important line ran via Coesfeld, Rheine and the Oldenburg region to Wilhelmshaven. The latter has not survived the transport policies of recent decades, nor have a number of branch lines and small railways that once provided access to the numerous villages, many of which were agricultural. They were replaced by a well-developed road network and the belief that one could largely do without the railway in the area. And so today, not even the large city of Münster has a loading station left for freight traffic. The book describes the railway system of the Münsterland region from its beginnings to the present time of changes in transport policy. After the decision was made to reactivate the Westfälische Landeseisenbahn between Sendenhorst and Münster for passenger traffic, serious consideration is now even being given to reviving the railway between Coesfeld, Borken and Bocholt as well.
