For one year, the German research icebreaker "Polarstern" drifts, frozen to an ice floe, in the Arctic polar sea. Its mission: to study climate change and its impacts on the Northern Polar region. The expedition project "MOSAiC" - the drift of the ship with the sea ice from autumn 2019 to autumn 2020 - is one of the largest and most complex research endeavors in recent years. On board is sea ice physicist Stefanie Arndt. While the COVID-19 pandemic brings the rest of the world to a standstill, Steffi Arndt shares in her letters home about life on board under extreme conditions, her work as a scientist in an international team, and the dramatic changes currently affecting the Northern Polar region. In just a few years, it may no longer exist in its current form if global warming cannot be halted.
