Film is known to be a very complex system that argues through image, sound, and the given time structure. At the beginning of any analysis, one's own film experience is paramount. However, how can this be transformed into a scientific analysis, and how does it differ from film criticism? What should be considered when developing one's own film analyses, and which content dimensions should be included? How does one arrive at a meaningful research question, and what tools are available to make one's observations and interpretations verifiable? In a first, more general section, these questions are discussed, solutions are provided, and the developed instruments of systematic film analysis are described and presented in their analytical relevance. A second part offers detailed example analyses from various authors.
