Eine Sommerreise

When Henry David Thoreau decides to cross the primeval forests of Maine together with a friend in 1857, he hires a Penobscot. Joseph Polis is the man's name, he has a canoe, and he is just the right man for the expedition through the forests, swamps and lakes, which is not without danger. Provided with the necessary provisions and the right clothes, they set off on their journey through the undiscovered country. Thoreau learns a lot along the way, not least through "Joe" at his side, who knows how to combine ancient knowledge and the advantages of civilisation.
