Summary: Ernst H. Gombrich, one of the most distinguished scholars of the 20th century, achieved the impossible: he succinctly and convincingly narrated the history of humanity in 360 pages. In 1935, at the age of just 25, he set out to write a world history for young readers. Without ever becoming tedious, he vividly and engagingly describes the complex development of humanity from the Stone Age to World War I, all while maintaining a keen eye for detail. He successfully weaves a grand narrative without overlooking or trivializing the complexity of historical events. As a result, the book offers something unique to both young and old readers: after reading it, they can grasp the major events of the past in one go, and Gombrich finally provides a coherent thread to our often fragmented knowledge of history.

Authors: Gombrich, Ernst H.; Gombrich, Leonie Lilavati (Introduction); Menschik, Kat (Illustrations)
