Mountaineering is as diverse as the mountains that are climbed – through smooth rock, on airy paths, in snow, or steep ice. Today, mountaineering is a mass sport, but until well into the 18th century, people avoided high altitudes. Malte Roeper is a recognized expert on the history of alpinism. He recounts the beginnings when wealthy city dwellers conquered the highest Alpine peaks with local guides. He describes the first successful expeditions to eight-thousanders and explains how the free climbing revolution of the 1970s created a model that still influences today’s generation of mountaineers.
