Stories from the Mysterious Damascus. For several years, a baker's boy in Damascus keeps a diary. He has much beauty, poetry, and humor to share, but he also speaks of poverty and fear. He describes his father, the baker, his mother, the master trader in the bazaar, and his clever little sister Leila. He tells of his friends and, of course, Uncle Salim, the old coachman who knows the most wonderful stories. One day, his father is taken by the police during a wave of arbitrary arrests and is tortured. This strengthens the boy's dream of becoming a journalist who fights against injustice and political persecution.
