Helene Wolf, the respectable merchant's wife, has a problem. A few days ago, on 7 October 1865, a murder took place in Mannheim. Actually, criminal investigations and court proceedings are not women's business. She would gladly leave the search for the murderer to the competent authorities. But a family scandal is looming. But how can a woman who finds her level of knowledge meagre solve a murder? Annoyingly, she has no access to official information and on top of that, she has to be extremely discreet in the interest of the family. Then there is all the housework! The servants have to be supervised, social obligations take their toll, the women's movement is emerging in Berlin and Leipzig and, to make matters worse, there is a war between Prussia and the southern German states. The historical crime novel is set in Mannheim, the Odenwald and Berlin. It follows Helene Wolf's investigations over the course of a year between 11 October 1865 and 6 September 1866.
