How significant is courtly poetry of the high Middle Ages? What value is to be attached to this literature written in the vernacular, which from the 12th century onwards is increasingly promoted by the secular elite?
The poets justify the promotion - and thus the value - with the beauty of their poetry, which is why the study consistently starts from such self-statements. On the basis of sociological theories of taste, however, the seemingly absolute notions of beauty can be related to the domineering demonstration of power. Indeed, the historical connection between beauty and metaphysics has a concrete effect on moral concepts and unfolds a specific practical effect. The study can thus show how the promotion of courtly poetry is integrated into social processes and is effective there as a power of order.
