Florence marries young to a clergyman who runs a strict household. When she seeks comfort and refuge with another man, she is cast out. Of her two sons, she is only allowed to take the younger one; the older must stay with his father. She finds no shelter with her parents or with church institutions. She works as a nurse and caregiver in private homes. When she falls in love with a wealthy widower, it seems her life is finally turning for the better. But one day, the man dies unexpectedly. Flo and the children are left without support. Meanwhile, World War I is looming. The Germans are recruiting spies in England. While searching for a job, Flo falls into their clutches.
