The Skelf women live every day in the shadow of death, running the family funeral and investigation business in Edinburgh. In the third volume of the Skelf series, matriarch Dorothy begins a relationship with policeman Thomas, while at the same time taking in a teenage lodger who has become estranged from her family. Dorothy's dog Einstein finds a human foot in the meadows, but when she brings it back to the funeral parlour in a dog poo bag for examination, it raises more questions than it answers.
The foot has been through a lot after death.
