The Skelf women live every day in the shadow of death, running the family funeral and investigation business in Edinburgh. In the third volume of the Skelf series, matriarch Dorothy begins a relationship with policeman Thomas, while at the same time taking in a teenage lodger who has become estranged from her family. Dorothy's dog Einstein finds a human foot in the meadows, but when she brings it back to the funeral parlour in a dog poo bag for examination, it raises more questions than it answers.
The foot has been through a lot after death. Daughter Jenny and granddaughter Hannah also have their hands full: The mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of a wealthy woman draw them into an unexpected family drama. What's more, Hannah's new astrophysicist colleague claims to be receiving messages from outer space. Nothing is clear as the Skelfs delve deeper into their most difficult cases yet. When the daughter of Jenny's violent and abusive ex-husband disappears without a trace and a wild animal is spotted in Edinburgh's parks, the Skelfs' world seems to go into overdrive.
Thrilling, dark, warm-hearted, humorous. The stakes are higher than ever.
