What can childhood and early youth be like for someone born in 1939 during the turmoil of World War II? Karin had to experience it. Her father, deployed in France, dies so early that she never got to know him. Her mother finds new love with an Austrian and moves with Karin and her brother to Vienna. But even here, the war is ever-present. Karin has just started school when her mother also dies. Throughout her life, she will miss her beloved mother. For Karin, who returned to Germany after the war and lives with her grandparents, it is now time to "get to work." She learns a trade, is always frugal, marries, and starts a family. Following her sons come grandchildren, and then even great-grandchildren. She feels at home in her house. The time of gratitude has come, and a once weak girl has long since become a strong woman.
