"A Midsummer Night's Dream" is one of the most well-known titles among Shakespeare's plays, and the piece enjoys great popularity due to its diverse staging possibilities. It explores the relationships between the genders on various levels of human society and in a magical fairy world. Relationships are consequently depicted in a multitude of variations, ranging from impetuous love madness to socially regulated marriage. The abundance of characters and layers of play creates a colorful cosmos that ultimately reveals itself in comedically fantastic harmony. The so-called Schlegel-Tieck translation, to which August Wilhelm Schlegel contributed, along with co-translators and editors Ludwig Tieck, Dorothea Tieck, and Wolf Heinrich Graf Baudissin, has become an independent German classic in the 19th century.
