Günter Grass has always considered himself a patriot of the constitution. The slight affection for eternal values, which can also be called "national" and quickly change with the flag, the whole loudly inflated homeland has always been foreign and far too meager to him. His patriotism is based on the best constitution that has ever existed in Germany: the Basic Law.

With the unity of 1990, it was violated.
